HEGT - June 2012

A few days late but here we go....it's time for the June edition of the Harvesting Edible Garden Tour.  Every month on the 21st (supposed to be anyways) we gather together around the blog table and read what everyone is harvesting that month.  Since I started the Farmers Market I harvest herbs every week and this month the 21st landed on Market day.  But that doesn't mean I didn't take pictures of what I was harvesting.....so fresh from the Market here is what Irish Gardens harvested this week.....actually all month.
Ok so the Rhubarb I didn't harvest all month just Thursday.  From left to right the herbs are:
Sage
Mint
Dill
Rosemary
Lemon Balm
Chocolate Mint
Marjoram
Chives
Oregano
Basil
Rhubarb

So what do you have that you can harvest in your garden?  Any veggies out there?  Add your post to the link below so others can visit and see whats harvesting around the blog table.

Harvesting Edible Garden Tour

Welcome one and all to this months edition of the Harvesting Edible Garden Tour.  Its time to show off what is harvesting in your gardens.... especially if it is edible.  For me it was once again time to give my greenhouse herbs a hair cut.  Granted most of these herbs that I cut are going to my Grandmothers but hey they still needed to be cut.  So on we go with the tour -
Here is a picture of all the herbs I harvested together.  But would I ever just leave it like that and not tell you what they are?  Of course not.....so on with the tour.
Ahh the smell of Dill.  This stuff is getting quite tall in the green house but I have to cut less often because there is only two plants.
My Oregano....also getting tall and smelling oh so wonderful.
My herb.....yup Melissa officinalis also known as Lemon Balm.  Not as tall today but again the actual reason for cutting was to give some to my Grandparents.
Parsley.....making a wonderful come back after the oh so mild winter....this one was not planted in the greenhouse so the hair cut isn't as often.
Hard to see I know but Rosemary's smell isn't hard to miss.  I love this smell don't you?
Winter Savory.....yea yea I know it's not winter anymore I should plant some summer savory.  I will not to worry but hey this guy is growing so well why would I not cut it.
Mint.  My old stand by for always being ready to harvest.  I have some variegated mint in there too.
Another faithful herb that is just about always ready to harvest is my garlic chives.  This cutting came from one of my sets that is not in the greenhouse.  But there is lots more where this came from.
A favorite for anyone who gets my herbs seems to be this guy.  Any guesses?  Chocolate Mint.  (Did you guess right?)  Yet another herb that always seems to need some trimming.

So what can you harvest from  your gardens today? Post about it and join the tour to let others know.

Crazy weather means.....

.......My herbs keep growing.  Not complaining of course just worried.  I mean it's the end of November and it's 60 outside and I can spot new growth on not only my herbs but my rose bushes and some of my hydrangea's.  What is wrong with this picture.  Anyways I wanted to see how things in the Greenhouse were progressing so I took a few pictures.....so on to a tour of my still green greenhouse.
It may not look like a lot is growing in there but there is.  Lets take if from the front left first hidden from view is some Sage and Echinacea.  Then in the back on the left that big glob of green yea that would be carrots.

The small middle row will be next.  There are two rows of herbs in there so we will start at the front left and move back.
First up would be this lovely Rosemary.  Can you see it in the big picture...don't worry it's there.
Next just behind the Rosemary would be Mint.  Not just any mint.....but Variegated mint.
See look at the colors....it smells heavenly too.
And behind that is Apple Mint.  Yea they are a little close to each other but it forces me to prune often.
Back at the front of the middle part again is Spearmint...not looking so good cause it is pot bound and not at all happy with me.
That big bunch of green in the middle yea that would be my herb....lemon balm.  Growing and very very happy.
Right behind the lemon balm is Banana Mint.  Yes there is such a thing.
And lastly in this row comes common oregano.
So starting at the front again but on the right side hidden out of view is Vicks plant....with some onions in the middle.  Vicks apparently doesn't like the cold...
Just behind that and up against the side is my Greek Oregano.....man this stuff is great.
Finally coming in view of the over all picture that green mess in the front right would be this guy Sweet Marjoram.  Oh and some more onions.
About the middle of the right side is this to the right is Marshmallow and the left is a small pot of Echinacea.
Along the back wall we find my favorite mint of all the ones I have.....Chocolate mint.
And to the right of Chocomint is Winter Savory.

So thats the tour of my greenhouse.  Lots still growing in there and I love it.  Hopefully Mother Nature will pick up her calendar and realize that it's late fall and drop the temp some.  Cause when she does winter can come and go and it's on to spring...time to plant again.

Harvesting Edible Garden Tour October 2011

It's the 21st!  Harvesting Edible Garden Tour day.  Whats harvesting in your edible garden today?  Here is what I have that needed some harvesting today.
 Nice fresh sage anyone?
 Lots of beautiful parsley leaves.
Basil.  The last harvest of the season but they look great.
Not a lot but some rosemary was ready as well.
Lemon balm oh what a smell that was when I cut these stems off.  Lots more to harvest still this season but not today.
These darn hot and spicy peppers are still growing and ripening.  Granted the few sweet peppers I have are still growing but much slower than these guys.
A few accidental cuts here as you can see.  There are so many that sometimes getting to the red ones is hard.
I  think this herb has to be one of my favorites I add it to everything.  My garlic chives once again needed a good trimming.  I am sure I will get at least one more harvest before they die back for winter.

So what do you have that is harvesting?  Post and add your link below.  I would love to take a tour of your edible gardens.

Harvesting Edible Garden Tour - April 21, 2011 + Thriving Thursday = One busy lady

Thriving Thursday falls on Harvesting Edible Garden Tour this month so the Theme is Harvest.  I want to see what is harvesting in your gardens that is edible.  But since it is also Thriving Thursday show off why you are harvesting.  Get ready cause I had a lot this week.

Parsley - This has been growing since August.  And it just keeps on going.  Thought about moving outside but why mess with it if it is still going so strong.  Poor stems keep getting crush by my sons Chair
Just look at that pile of stems.  I usually cut the stems of of the parsley and dry just the leaves.  They are so fragile.

Lemon Balm - My herb.  Has grown quite a bit since coming to my house.  Although fits the category of Thriving didn't really need harvesting but since I was taking care of almost all the other herbs inside I added this one to the list.
Not a bad little pile of leaves.

Pesto Basil - One of my favorites.  I love pesto sauce and let me tell you this plant smells just like it.  I have used it when cooking chicken many times.  I love it.
They don't yield a lot of leaves unless you do a lot of little harvests.  But oh the smells in my kitchen at this point.
Lemon Thyme - After the pesto basil this smell just added to it.  My kitchen is making me hungry.  I love the way this herb looks.  Green leaves with a yellow tinted edging.  Makes it easy to see that it is the Lemon Thyme not Common.
Long and compact stems make harvesting interesting.  When I dry these I use a bad that has very very small holes as the leaves fall off very easily.  I actually lost a lot to the dirt in the harvesting process.
Oregano-Thyme.  Grows like Thyme has a bit of an Oregano smell to it.  A new herb to my garden this year.  Not sure yet of the taste but the smell is wonderful.  It isn't a strong Oregano smell like Common Oregano is.
As the harvest went on the difference between Thyme and Oregano smells was harder to find.  It does smell a bit like both.  Course after that Lemon Thyme and Pesto Basil it is dull smelling.
Rosemary - This is one of those herbs I have been trying to grow from seed but just can't seem to get past the first 2 sets of leaves.  So I bought this one.
Super easy to harvest and a very gentle and pleasant smell.
Marjoram - The variegated coloring of this herb is what drew me in.  This is much like the Rosemary in that it is another herb I keep trying to start from seed and don't get very far.
Didn't need a lot of trimming but got quite a bit more than expected.
English Thyme - Just plain old ordinary Thyme basically.  Every time I harvest I think I should smell Lemons as it looks just like it....other than the edges.
This guy is having a few issues in that it is loosing a lot of leaves to the dirt so it got a lot more harvested than needed to encourage new healthy growth.
Winter Savory - Not sure how much longer this guy will be around.  As there are 2 main types of Savory...winter and summer.  Not sure if that means they are only good for that season or if it is just the way they grow.  Winter Savory does seems to be a little thicker than Summer Savory.
Like the English Thyme this was starting to loose a lot of leaves.  Although it may be because of this season I cut a lot off to encourage new healthy growth.  Fingers crossed.
