Little bugs everywhere

Bugs are everywhere even after a rainy day.  With the right type of camera you can get up close and personal with them and see what they really look like.  Each bug is either good or bad....finding out which they are can help with a good close up.
Like this ant.  He is on the peony bud and is very good.  They do something to help the buds...not sure what but I know they are supposed to be there.
I believe these are aphids.  The jury is still deliberating on what they actually are as most aphids are green.  But what ever they are they are on my Rose of Sharon plants and not good.  And as you can see there are lots of them.
Not the clearest picture in the world sorry but these green winged guys I also am not sure if they are good or bad.  They are on my roses.....personally unless you are a ladybug you don't belong on my roses so I say bad.
A Daddy Long Leg on my Rose bush......not sure where to put him in the good vs bad category cause he is pretty harmless but in my opinion like above isn't a lady bug and there for should not be on my roses.

So what kind of bugs do you see hanging out around your gardens?  Ever think to take a picture of them up close and see what they really look like? Click on any of these pictures to get a bigger view of it.....you may be surprised as to what you can see.

Calling all Gardeners......HELP!!!

Ok fellow Gardeners.  I know your out there.  I have a bug problem.

 I found these....
....living on my Rose of Sharon plants.  Some on one plant in the front yard, some on another in the back yard, and yet some more on another in the side yard.  None of the infected plants are close to another one but are next to other Rose of Sharon plants....they seem to be fine though.  In fact I have two babies right next to each other but only one is infected.  They don't look like our normal green aphids but I am unsure as to what they are.  Are they good or bad?  If bad please someone help me find a chemical free way to get rid of them.

Deer a pest at the worst time

I love deer don't get me wrong.  I love watching them run through fields so graceful.  But right now.....
Well they are just driving me batty.  See my Morning Glory vines and Rose of Sharon bushes are ripening their seed pods right now and the lovely deer are eating them.

this Hibiscus bush only had one seed pod on it and thankfully I was able to save it before the munching started.  See in the picture the pot in the upper right hand corner?  Yea that was full of beautiful impatients but now look at it...a bunch of stubs.

Marigolds are doing just fine.  Deer in fact don't like them which is why I surounded my gardens this year....apparently when they are hungery they will still enter the garden anyways...they just won't eat the marigolds.

Good guys or bad?

So my faithful readers I need help.  I have these bugs that just love my young Rose of Sharon bushes.  They don't seem to be eating it just hanging out on the stems but I would love to know what they are.  Especially because I have now found them in 3 different colors.
A blueish aqua color.  Very pretty if you ask me.  This guy was far less shy than some of the others.
Purple.  I have a lot of these and they are more shy than the blue guy.  They see the camera and start to magically rotate on the stem away from the camera.
This guy I have the most of.  Mr Green dude.  He looks like a leaf but then again so do the others.  They all just seem to hang out on the stems like they are in the pictures.  Mr Green dude is the shyest of them all as it is hard to get a picture of him.  I have to set the camera up for close and quickly but stealthy move in focus the shot and take it.  Most of the time I get just a stem.

So can anyone help me out here and tell me if these guys are good guys or bad ones?  I like looking at them as they are kinda cool looking especially now that I have found a 3rd color.  The green and purple have been around but the blue...he's new.

Help Help let me know.

Oh the Gall

What you see here is Grape Gall made by Phylloxera. A pest of Eurpean Grape vines expecialy here in the North East of America. Basically these little guys live in the bark and roots all winter and when the folliage starts to come out they awaken and this is what can be found.

This is what Gall looks like on a leaf. It goes thru both sides. Kinda funny looking but not good for the Grape vine.

This is actually a Gall that was formed over a Grape bunch. If left on the vine it will essensially kill it. The fruit will not get the chance to come to it's full potential. Unfortunatly the only thing to do is to cut off the infected sections and clean up the vine as best as possible. Be sure to prune after the harvest is over to prevent reinfestation.

Being a curious bunch we before we even knew what it was we cut off a small branch with a Gall on it and cut it open. This picture here is what we found and thankfully it helped us find out what it was that infested the poor grape vine. This little red-orange worm is just a baby and if we hadn't found it, it would have grown to infest the rest of the vine. An interesting fact was that American hybrids like out Concord is resistant to this pest. So it only seems to be effecting the old vine....guess we know it is not and American hybrid one.

Mosquitoe-be-gone

.

My latest addition to my ever growing garden. This plant is called Pennyroyal. It is a very invasive plant to be carefull where you plant it. But it a strong smelling Mint like plant that has this wonderful quality of repelling Mosquitoes.
The lables on these plants actually state that it is commonly used as a insect repellent. As a member of the mint family it can be planted near many of your vegatables just as long as you keep triming it to control it's spread.
As you can see from some of the pictures I took the plant has very pretty lavender flowers durring the summer. This is also considered an Herb but there are a lot of cautions about it because of the oil's strength....one sniff and you know just how strong. Before harvesting read up on it....me I plan on just using as a wonderful smelling ornamental type plant....with the side benefit of keeping Mosquitoes away
